The evening may skirt the sticky edges of New Age mysticism and the sentimentality of late blooming romance novels. But as directed with gentle precision by Joe Mantello, ”Lillian” is mostly an immensely appealing work that finds an ordering poetry in the seemingly banal. Both Mr. Cale’s performance and his words give off a quality of being rooted in common soil, like the chrysanthemums Lillian so loves.
